Trauma Rehab Centers

Trauma Rehab Centers

Most people are familiar with a few types of rehabilitation, such as physical rehabilitation after surgery or an accident, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation for addictions. Not as many, however, realize that there are also rehabilitation facilities for those who have suffered various kinds of trauma.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma can very loosely be defined as anything that is so upsetting to the victim that it has a long-term, severely negative impact on his or her life and makes it difficult or impossible to perform everyday functions. A person who was trapped in an elevator and suffered severe claustrophobia for years after may be said to have experienced a trauma. Most often, however, those who see treatment at trauma rehab centers have suffered from one of four basic types of trauma.

War

In the days of World War I, those who were mentally or emotionally damaged by the horrors of war were said to be shell shocked. Today, we recognize that condition as post-traumatic stress disorder, or PSTD. With America embroiled in far-off wars, this is one of the most common reasons why people seek treatment for trauma.

Sexual Abuse

Rape and sexual assault account for another large contingent of those who seek help dealing with the aftermath of trauma. Whether the person abused is a child or an adult, and whether the abuse was a one-time event or recurring, severe repercussions can include loss of self-esteem, anxiety disorder, depression, suicidal ideation, disassociation and poor performance at work or school.

Physical Abuse

Again, both adults and children may suffer from physical abuse. Battered spouses and children of alcoholic parents, for instance, can suffer long-term disabilities as a result of this type of trauma, especially since it is likely to be ongoing over a long period of time.

Family Tragedy

The death or loss of a loved one can also be traumatic, especially if it was sudden or the result of a particularly horrific event such as murder. For young children, however, even divorce can be traumatic enough to require treatment.

Get Help at Trauma Rehab Centers

If you are suffering symptoms of PTSD from whatever source, there is help available to you. If your symptoms leave you able to function in your home environment, you can opt for outpatient treatment such as intensive counseling. If, however, the home environment is abusive, or if you, like so many trauma sufferers, have been self-medicating with illicit drugs or alcohol, residential treatment is most likely the better choice.

Feel free to call our toll-free number for more information about the services available to you. You don’t have to suffer any more.
