Coping with a Hypomanic Episode

Coping with a Hypomanic Episode

Eating a well-balanced diet is more important than ever during a hypomanic episode

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that can significantly impact a person’s life and involves shifts between manic, hypomanic and depressive episodes. In a hypomanic state, those with this disorder experience increased energy, distractibility and goal-directed activity. They may be more likely to engage in high-pleasure activities, such as shopping or sex, with potentially harmful consequences. During a hypomanic episode, things can feel out of control. Fortunately, there are many ways to cope with this. A few easy ways to cope with hypomania include eating well, getting enough sleep, cheaply pampering yourself and writing out your feelings.

Maintaining a Healthy Diet

Diet is without a doubt connected to emotional wellbeing, particularly for those in a hypomanic state. You might sometimes get so caught up in completing a project that you simply forget to eat a meal. Or you might consciously skip a meal because you don’t feel very hungry. However, eating a sufficient, well-balanced diet is more important than ever during a hypomanic episode when you are using so much energy. Without proper nutrition, you could face health problems.

Get Enough Sleep

When in a hypomanic episode, it is likely that sleep is the last thing on your list of priorities. In fact, you might even feel that you could just skip sleeping altogether with all the energy pent up inside of you. However, it is essential that you keep track of how much sleep you are getting and aim to maintain a normal sleep schedule. If you are having trouble falling asleep at night, you might consider drinking a hot cup of herbal tea or soaking in a warm bath before getting in bed.

Cheaply Pamper Yourself

During a hypomanic episode, most people seek out activities that bring immediate pleasure. Unfortunately, this often brings about consequences, especially if large amounts of money are spent. For this reason, it is important that you avoid making any expensive purchases while in a state of hypomania and choose to instead pamper yourself in ways that are cheap and easy. For example, you could hold a personal, at-home spa day where you paint your nails, listen to relaxing music, and do some deep breathing. Or you could instead treat yourself to an afternoon at a nearby park.

Write It Out

Writing can help you to express the constant rush of thoughts in your head. For this reason, you might consider writing in a diary while you are experiencing a hypomanic episode. For example, if you find that you are becoming angry at someone, write down your feelings instead of yelling at him or her. Writing can also be a great way to explore your creativity while releasing your thoughts. You could try writing a poem, a short story or even a novel about any topic you are interested in.
